The Public Services Ombudsman has found serious shortcomings in the way applications for disability benefits are handled

Wendy Cumming says the process lacks transparency, with eligibility criteria not made public and unsuccessful applicants often given no reasons for being refused.

Her office investigated four cases and found the average application and reconsideration process took around four years.

She also raised concerns that the identities of healthcare professionals sitting on assessment panels are kept confidential, even from the Ombudsman.

The Department of Social Security has agreed to an external review, which is expected to examine eligibility criteria, decision-making, delays and safeguards around the Director’s discretion.

Ms Cumming spoke to Jonathan Sacramento who asked her why she felt there was a deficiency.
