The Tourist Board and Department of the Environment have launched a pilot project examining how tourism can develop while protecting Gibraltar's natural environment.

The Nature Positive Tourism Pilot, being carried out with a specialist consultancy, will assess how tourism depends on local ecosystems, the pressures created by visitors and opportunities for the industry to contribute to conservation.

Government, tourism and hospitality businesses, tour operators, transport providers and environmental groups will be consulted.

Their input will help develop a strategic roadmap setting out potential future measures.

Environment Minister John Cortes says Gibraltar's natural assets, including the Nature Reserve and macaques, must be properly protected, with animal welfare a priority.

The pilot will continue over the coming months, with its findings used to identify practical measures for Gibraltar's tourism industry.
