The Royal Navy’s HMS Mersey has arrived in Gibraltar today.

The offshore patrol vessel’s visit comes during what the Ministry of Defence describes as a ‘busy period’ of operations supporting UK maritime security and wider NATO commitments.

During her time here the ship will undergo routine maintenance while the her crew strengthens the longstandingconnection between Navy and Gibraltar.

The ship has around 50 personnel and is designed to conduct surveillance, escort and constabulary tasks in UK and international waters.

In recent months, HMS Mersey has been involved in monitoring Russian naval activity.

Previously the vessel has undertaken duties including fishery protection and defence engagement, with the MOD saying her “versatility and readiness make her an important platform in the Royal Navy’s efforts to protect the UK’s interest at home and overseas.
